OK, why is my computer slowing down!?!

Does it seem like you’re computer has slowed down over the years? You haven’t installed any new software, but it seems like it’s taking longer to open the same website or QuickBooks for no apparent reason.

Your “IT Guy” may have told you this before, but over time computers can slow down if they haven’t been properly maintained. You should routinely clear your Internet cache and defragment your hard drive. Make sure you don’t have unnecessary programs installed. Sometimes these programs continue to run in the background, silently consuming precious system resources.  Beware of online companies claiming they can speed up your computer for a one time fee. They usually install software on your computer that actually slows it down even more, or worse, infects your computer with spyware. Lastly, you can contact your IT provider and request that they optimize your computer. Most IT companies already have processes in place to do this. If all else fails, it may in fact be time for an upgrade.

If your computer is 3-5 years old the warranty may have expired. This means if a part, such as the motherboard fails, then you will have to pay out of pocket to replace it. At this point it may be cost effective to replace the computer entirely. Call your hardware manufacturer and ask them when your warranty expires so you can anticipate and budget for this expense. It’s always better to plan ahead for these type of IT expenses rather than reacting when your computer fails completely, which usually tends to occur when you’re preparing that last minute million dollar quote.

When the time comes to upgrade talk to your IT provider first. Explain what you’ll be using the computer for and ask them to send you their recommendation. Most IT providers also resell hardware, which means you can save $$ by having them quote the new hardware for you.
